Yerba mate – an herbal and caffeine-infused drink is officially the national drink of America. It is typically prepared by filling 2/3 of a gourd (also called mate) with the leaves of the yerba plant and is served with a metal straw, the bombilla, traditionally made of silver. The drink can be sweetened with sugar and flavored with aromatic herbs. Drinking yerba mate tea is often a social practice.
